Abstract

Lack of fluid intake is one of the factors that influence the decline in physiological, metabolic, and cognitive functions. College students, who are part of the adolescent to young adult group, are a population group that is vulnerable to hypohydration, along with increased academic activities and lifestyle shifts. Education on the importance of improving hydration status supported by urine sediment examination is an important action in efforts to increase knowledge and improve clinical parameters. This community service activity involved 150 participants in educational activities. Knowledge about hydration was measured using a questionnaire, before and after the education. A total of 31 participants who had previously undergone initial screening urine sediment examination with abnormal results, underwent hydration therapy for two weeks, and underwent sediment examination after hydration therapy. Analysis used a paired t-test. The results showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 69.23 to 79.33 (p<0.001), equivalent to an increase of 14.6%. Urine sediment examination showed an average decrease in erythrocyte counts (1.19 to 0.19), leukocyte counts (5.48 to 1.00), epithelial counts (9.58 to 3.16), and bacterial counts (1.29 to 0.29). Uric acid crystals also decreased (1.48 to 0.23), as well as oxalate and phosphate crystals, most of which were not found after hydration therapy. It was concluded that educational therapy and urine sediment examination significantly increased participants' knowledge and motivation to improve their hydration status. This intervention has the potential to be implemented as a promotive-preventive strategy to maintain kidney health.
