Abstract

Liver cirrhosis is a state of liver fibrosis and nodule formation caused secondary to chronic injury resulting in changes in the normal lobular organization of the liver. In cirrhosis of the liver there is a turn of hepatocyte cells into scar tissue (fibrosis) resulting in liver function mediated by hepatocyte cells. One of the most common etiologies causing liver cirrhosis is non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Therefore, cirrhosis of the liver that occurs in patients with NAFLD needs special attention to prevent mortality from this disease. . Recent studies have increasingly investigated natural herbal medicines as potential therapies for cirrhosis of the liver, mainly because of their abundant source of antifibrogenic agents and their lower side effects, lower costs, and higher acceptability. One of the therapeutic agents that has been extensively studied recently is curcumin. Curcumin is the main bioactive component of Curcuma longa L., which has various biological and pharmacological functions such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-angiogenic, anti-thrombotic, and others. Therefore, in this literature review, an analysis of the effect of giving curcumin on various outcomes of liver cirrhosis patients was carried out so that it could be used as clinical evidence-based medicine. Study searches were conducted on various databases such as Pubmed, ScienceDirect, Directory of Open Access Journals, and the Cochrane Library. From the search results obtained a total of 660 studies. The studies that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria were the 3 studies analyzed in this literature review. Administration of curcumin improved MELD, MELD-Na, Child-Pugh, CLDQ, SF-26 scores, and various other blood biochemical parameters. No adverse events were reported with any type of laser therapy in all inclusion studies. administration of curcumin 1000 – 1500mg can improve outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis with NAFLD ranging from disease severity, QoL, to biochemical parameters that represent liver function.
