Abstract

Infants with Low Birth Weight (LBW) is the first leading cause of death in perinatal. LBW infants experience problem due immaturity, environmental condition outside the uterus that are different from the condition of the uterus that cause stress and affect their physiology. Low light is expected to help LBW infants to adapt better. Objective: To determine the effect of providing low light on frequency of respiratory and oxygen saturation in LBW infants in NICU of Bethesda Hospital Yogyakarta. Methods: This was a quasy experimental design with one group pre-test and post-test design without control. The sample was 20 LBW infants taken with sampling quota technique. A dimmed light therapy was given for 12 hours from 07.00 PM - 07.00 AM. Statistical tests used Wilcoxon test.  Results: The average respiratory frequency before dimmed light therapy is 45x/minute and the average respiratory frequency after low light therapy is 42,9x/minute. There is a decrease in the respiratory frequency by 2.1 with a p-value of 0.001. The average oxygen saturation before low light therapy is 95.7% and the average oxygen saturation after dimmed light therapy is 97%. There is an increase in the oxygen saturation by 1.3 with a p-value of 0.000.
