Background: A dysphagia screening protocol has been recommended to identify patients at risk of aspiration. Purpose: to decide the evidence-based legitimacy of dysphagia screening items using instrumental assessment as the reference standard. Methods: There are four data bases used, Science Direct, SAGE journal, ProQuest and PubMed for dysphagia and post stroke screening searches. The inclusion criteria used are for publications in the last 5 years from 2017-2022, full-text and English speaking articles, as titled, and retrospective cohort studies research. Result: The total number of articles obtained from the data base is 476 articles. 7 articles are fully reviewed and meet the inclusion criteria. The quality of the study is variable. Swallow testing, generally with water, was the most common item given throughout the study. Both ingestion and nonswallowing items are identified as predictive aspirations. Both ingestion protocol and validity were consistent throughout the study Conclusion: The best combination of nonswallowing and swallowing stuff as well as the best swallowing protocol remains unclear. The findings of this review will help in the development of a valid clinical screening instrument.
