Abstract

Traditional divers may experience barotrauma and decompression sickness, which are emergency diving conditions. This study aims to determine the community's knowledge of decompression sickness, prevention methods, and the identification of decompression sickness and barotrauma symptoms through health screening in Leppe Village, Soropia District, Konawe Regency. Method: Education was provided in the form of health education sessions and health screenings. The target group for this activity was traditional divers in Leppe Village, Soropia Sub-district, Konawe District, numbering 30 people. Results. The level of knowledge among respondents before the educational intervention showed that 50% had low knowledge and 23.3% had adequate knowledge. After the intervention, the percentage of respondents with low knowledge decreased to 16%, while those with adequate knowledge increased to 40%. Consequently, the percentage of respondents with good knowledge increased from 26.6% to 43%. Several symptoms were experienced by more than 50% of fishermen, including skin disorders such as itching and a rash (bluish discolouration) on the skin, musculoskeletal problems such as joint and muscle pain, and some fishermen had experienced paralysis and difficulty urinating. There is a need for education on safe diving practices (in accordance with standards). Collaborate with cross-sectoral agencies to train fishermen in alternative fishing methods besides diving.
