Effervescent Tablets as an Alternative to Increase Breast Milk Production with an Indicator of Baby's Defecation Frequency in Breastfeeding Mothers

Abstract

Breast milk is a natural nutritional intake that is good and important because it contains nutrients that are really needed for babies during the first 6 months of life. Breast milk containing lactagogum can help stimulate breast milk production, so it can help mothers overcome breastfeeding problems. It has the potential to increase breast milk production as proven by increasing baby weight, increasing baby defecation frequency, baby urination frequency and breastfeeding frequency. Exclusive breastfeeding is still relatively low due to the obstacles experienced by mothers, one of which is that breast milk is small and insufficient, thus hampering breastfeeding activities, therefore efforts are needed to increase breast milk production. One way is non-pharmacological by consuming Moringa leaf effervescent tablets which contain lactagogum as an alternative to increase breast milk production. The aim of this research is to determine the effect of Moringa leaf effervescent tablets on breast milk production as an indicator of the baby's defecation frequency. This study used a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group design, on 32 postpartum mothers who were recruited using a purposive sampling method, using the Endiburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) questionnaire, respondent characteristics sheet, adherence to consuming tablets, and a defecation frequency observation sheet. The size of the baby is used to measure the amount of breast milk produced. Data analysis used the Friedman Test, Mann Whitney. The results showed that there was an effect of Moringa leaf effervescent tablets 100 mg once a day for 14 days as an alternative to increasing breast milk production. The indicators for the frequency of defecation in babies, on average before the intervention, were 2.69, increasing to an average of 4.50 (p=0.010) with an effect size of 1, 04. There is an effect of giving Moringa leaf effervescent tablets to increase breast milk production as an indicator of the baby's defecation frequency.
