Patients undergoing treatment in the ICU are perceived by their families as a threat to life. Changes in health status to critical illness, especially those that occur suddenly can trigger psychological responses such as anxiety for the family. The combination of progressive muscle training and autogenic relaxation is one of the complementary therapies that can reduce anxiety. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of a combination of progressive muscle training and autogenic relaxation on family anxiety in the ICU of Kendari City Hospital. The research design was a quasi-experimental pre and post test with a control group. The instrument to measure family anxiety is STAI (State Trait Anxiety Inventory). The sample in this study was 60 people. The sampling technique was non-probability sampling with consecutive sampling method. The results showed that the combination of progressive muscle training and autogenic relaxation had an effect on decreasing family anxiety of critically ill patients with p value = 0.000 (<0.05). The results of this study can be applied as an effective relaxation method so that it can help overcome anxiety problems in other cases.
